Lesson objective: Apply understanding of percents to generate multiple equivalent expressions to calculate with percents.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of percents to a real-life situation. Students are asked to create multiple expressions in order to calculate with percents.

Key Concept students will use:

  • The distributive property allows for using a variety of expressions to calculate with percents.

Skills students will use:

  • Creating equivalent expressions using the distributive property
  • Calculating with percents (Grade 6, Unit 2)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they make sense of the quanities and their relationships in a real-life context.

Key vocabulary:

  • expression
  • percent
  • double number line
