Lesson objective: Understand that we can use equations with equivalent forms of percents, such as fractions and decimals, to solve problems.

Students bring prior knowledge of percents from 6.RP.A.3.c. This prior knowledge is extended to creating equations with equivalent forms of percents in order to solve for unknown values. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is understanding the relationship between expressions and equations.

The concept is developed through work with double number lines, which support the development of multiplicative reasoning.

This work helps students deepen their understanding of equivalence because students have to set expressions equal to each other in order to solve for unknown values.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) as they evaluate the reasoning behind two approaches to creating equations using percent values.
