Lesson objective: Apply the properties of operations to identify equivalent expressions.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with rewriting expressions into equivalent expressions. The properties of operations are used here because it supports the work from earlier in the unit. This work develops students' understanding that equivalent expressions have the same value.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they use the properties of operations to determine equivalency of expressions. Students will apply the commutative and/or distributive properties to simplify expressions.  They will recognize that equivalent expressions will look identical to each other after the properties of operations have been applied.
