Lesson objective: Describe patterns using properties of operations.

This lesson helps to build fluency with identifying, extending and describing patterns. Number lines and number charts  can be used here because they support visualizing numerical patterns. This work develops students' understanding that we can find patterns in the number system and explain them using properties of operations.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they discover connections between patterns in the number system. Emphasizing multiples in descriptions of patterns in the lesson help students move from relying on addition to more fluently using multiplication.

Key vocabulary:

  • extend
  • factor
  • multiple
  • pattern
  • pattern unit
  • product
