Lesson objective: Fluently evaluate expressions containing whole-number exponents by applying Order of Operations.

This lesson helps to build fluency with evaluating and simplifying expressions containing exponents. This work develops students' understanding that the expression represents a "recipe" which can also be evaluated using Order of Operations to produce a known value.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and computationally) as they explore the meaning of exponents and as they use Order of Operations to evaluate algebraic expressions containing exponents.

Key vocabulary:

  • base
  • evaluate
  • exponent
  • expression
  • factors
  • order of operations
  • value
