Lesson objective: Fluently write algebraic expressions and identify their parts using mathematical terminology.

This lesson helps to build fluency with writing, evaluating, and naming the parts of algebraic expressions. Highlighting words emphasizes the connection between language and algebraic expressions. This work develops students' understanding that algebraic expressions can represent both a “recipe” and a quantity (that we may or may not be able to name with a number).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they translate words into algebraic expressions and evaluate algebraic expressions at specific values of the variable.

Key vocabulary:

  • evaluate
  • expression
  • factor
  • product
  • sum
  • term
  • value
