Lesson objective: Apply using properties of operations to solve problems in scientific notation.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of using properties of operations (for numbers written in scientific notation) to a real-life situation. Students are asked to find the total number of messages that are sent out each day and find the ratio of videos viewed to internet searches in one second.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Because scientific notation is an equivalent form of numbers, we can perform operations with numbers written in this form using the properties of operations.

Skills students will use:

  • Properties of operations hold for all rational numbers (Grade 7, Unit 5)
  • Properties of integer exponents 

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2  (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they make use of different properties to perform operations in scientific notation as they view data about internet usage.
