Lesson objective: Students will multiply or divide to solve word problems involving equal groups or arrays.

This lesson helps to build fluency with multiplicaton and division. Unitizing is used here because it supports the students developing understanding of these operations.  This work develops students' understanding that drawings and equations can be used to represent and solve multiplication and division situational problems involving equal groups and arrays.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they use models, diagrams and equations to solve problems.

Key vocabulary:

  • division
  • equal groups
  • factors
  • models
  • multiplication
  • representation
