Lesson objective: Identify unit fractions.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with identifying unit fractions. Tape diagrams and number lines are used here because they support an understanding of the importance of unit fractions for creating non-unit fractions. This work develops students' understanding that fractions are numbers that name the result of partitioning of a whole.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (model with mathematics) as they they partition number lines and tape diagrams to show unit fractions.
