Lesson objective:  Use place value to compare the value of a multi-digit number to another multi-digit number.

This lesson helps to build fluency with comparing numbers using place value.  A comparison place value chart is used here because it highlights the values of the numbers in each place value.  This work develops students' understanding that each place can be used to compare digits' values.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they understand that numbers have specific value.  Students will extend their learning by comparing multiple numbers and analyzing each place value to indicate the value of the numbers in comparisons with other numbers.

Key vocabulary:

  • compare
  • greater
  • hundreds
  • hundred thousands
  • less than
  • tens
