Lesson objective: Estimate products and solve multiplication problems.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of the standard algorithm to a real-life situation. Students are asked to calculate the amount of garbage produced yearly for a variety of people based on the yearly average of 1,508 pounds.

Key Concept students will use:

  • The standard algorithm can be a efficient way to solve multiplication problems.
  • Estimation and place value can be used to determine the reasonableness of products.

Skills students will use:

  • estimating partial products
  • estimating total products
  • multiplying with the standard algorithm

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they estimate products and use the standard algorithm for multiplication.

Key vocabulary:

  • algorithm
  • digit value
  • distributive property
  • estimation
  • multiplication
  • partial product
  • place value
  • product
  • standard algorithm
