Lesson objective: Fluently multiply whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

This lesson helps to build fluency with the standard algorithm for multiplication. This work develops students' understanding that the standard algorithm relies upon the distributive property and place value concepts.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they solve multiplication problems with the standard algorithm.

Key vocabulary:

  • algorithm
  • digit values
  • distributive property
  • estimation
