Lesson objective: Use place value and estimation to determine if a product is reasonable.

This lesson helps to build fluency with estimating partial and total products. This work develops students' understanding that they can stop and monitor their thinking and use estimation to enure that they are multiplying digit values when using the standard algorithm.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they determine the reasonableness of products. Students should recognize when digit values have not been multiplied correctly and when the algorithm has been applied incorrectly.
