Lesson objective: Compare the values of a digits and fluently multiply by 10.
This lesson helps to build fluency with place value. Students may use Base 10 blocks, digit cards and/or a place value chart as these materials highlight the visual representation of a digit's value increasing by 10. This work develops students' ability to recognize that the digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for an express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they identify that when a digit is multiplied by 10 its value increases to 10 times the original value.
