# 2. Understand place value: the power of 10 (C)

Lesson objective: Understand that a number multiplied by ten will result in a product that is ten times the value of the original number.

Students bring prior knowledge of fluently adding and subtracting within 1,000 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction from grade 3 (3.NBT.A.1 and 3.NBT.A2). This prior knowledge is extended to multiplication and division as students multiply whole numbers by 10 and divide whole numbers by 10.  A conceptual challenge students may encounter is understanding that the digits in the ones place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.

The concept is developed through work with a place value chart which allows students to see the digit move from one place value to another.

This work helps students deepen their understanding of number because place value directly impacts the value of a number.  The value of a number increases or decreases by ten times the original value as digits shift to the left or to the right.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for regularity in repeated reasoning) as they use patterns and understanding of place value to find missing information.
