Big Ideas: Estimation can be used to determine if solutions make sense. Estimation saves time and effort when an exact answer is not necessary. The accuracy of estimations is affected by what place value the numbers are rounded to. Students will use rounding to estimate solutions to one and two step problems. Students will learn the value of estimation as it relates to real-life situations and how it can help them quickly and easily assess the accuracy of solutions to their problems. Judging the level of accuracy necessary in a given situation is essential to applying their estimation skills. Vocabulary: rounding, estimation, estimate, about, benchmark numbers
