Lesson objective: Choose and use the most appropriate measurement tool based on the size of the object or distance being measured. 

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of measurement to a real-life situation. Students are asked to participate in a paper airplane contest and decide which tools are most appropriate for measuring the distances the planes traveled.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • For a given measurement task, certain measurement tools will be more appropriate than others.

Skills students will use:

  • Measruing lengths with non-standard units (Grade 1, Unit 16)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they analyze the distances in the chart to determine which tool is most appropriate for measuring that length. Students will also construct a paper airplane according to the length criteria and determine which tool is most appropriate for measuring the length of the airplane. These tasks will provide students several opportunities to choose the most appropriate tool depending on the length being measured, as well as the task.
