Lesson objective: Select the most appropriate measurement tool to determine the length of an object or perform a linear measurement task.  

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with choosing the most appropriate measurement tool based on the task or size of the object to be measured. Common classroom and household objects are used here to support the concept of measurement as a real-life application. This work develops students' understanding that for a given measurement task, certain measurement tools will be more appropriate than others. 

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they measure objects and solve problems choosing the most appropriate measurement tool based on the distance or size of the object.
