Big Ideas: Finding patterns in data provides evidence for predictions. This lesson builds on students' work to determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s. This lesson uses a scenario in which students are collecting marbles to find repeating patterns in data in order to predict future numbers in the series. Students determine what patterns are in the data and predict how many marbles will be accumulated on given days. The mathematical concepts in this lesson builds toward students' future work with generating number patterns that follow a given rule and identifying apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. Vocabulary: repeating pattern, constant growth
