Lesson objective: Fluently use the common denominator strategy to divide fractions.  Understand how the value of the dividend in relation to the divisor affects the value of the quotient.

This lesson helps to build fluency with fraction division with like denominators. A double number line is used here because it highlights the relationship of the dividend and divisor and supports creating same size pieces by using the common denominator. This work develops students' understanding that fraction division may be done using common denominators.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they write and solve division expressions from questions.  Students should look for patterns as they work through the questions and use patterns to make sense of the problems.

Key vocabulary:

  • dividend
  • divisor
  • quotient
  • remainder
