Lesson objective: Apply scale factors to find the areas of scale drawings.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of scale drawings to a real-life situation. Students are asked to determine the amount of flooring needed to cover the floors in a home from a blueprint.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Areas of pairs of scaled figures are related by the square of the scale factor.

Skills students will use:

  • measurement conversions (Grade 6, Unit 1)
  • scaling by a scale factor
  • finding area (Grade 5, Unit 15)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they convert between standard units (feet to inches etc). Students also engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (model with mathematics) as they use, create or reason about the relationship between a drawing and a real life object.

Key vocabulary:

  • original figure
  • proportions
  • scale drawing
  • scale factor
  • unit conversions
