Lesson objective: Apply understanding of counting to solve problems.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of counting objects within 5 to a real-life situation. Students are asked to help a teacher distribute the correct number of pretzels to each students according to the number they ordered.

Key Concepts students will use: 

  • Each item in a collection must be counted once and only once.
  • The last number name used names the quantity of objects in the set.

Skills students will use:

  • counting within 5

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they carefully count out the pretzels, counting each pretzel once and only once.
