Lesson objective: Solve a complex problem using various strategies for multi-digit division.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of multi-digit division to a real-life situation. Students are asked to divide up cargo among 6 submersibles.  Students must include essential cargo and then make choices about the rest of the cargo to meet a specified cargo weight.

Key Concept students will use:

• We can divide whole numbers of up to four digits using a variety of strategies; the choice of strategy does not change the quantities involved or the relationships between them.

Skills students will use:

• decomposition of  single- and multi-digit whole numbers by place value or by creating friendly numbers for use in division problems (Grade 4, Unit 2).
• the area model for division (Grade 4, Unit 2).
• the partial quotient model for division (Grade 4, Unit2).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1, make sense of problems and persevere in solving them as they analyze the problem and determine a strategy for solving it.  Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8, look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning as they examine similarities and differences between strategies.
