Lesson objective: Solve multi-step division word problems using various strategies.

This lesson helps to build fluency with multi-digit whole number division using various strategies. The area model and partial quotients are used here because they support the development of other strategies and the standard algorithm. This work develops students' understanding that regardless of the strategy used, the relationships between the numbers and the solution remain the same.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #1, make sense of problems and persevere in solving them as they analyze the problem and determine a strategy for solving it.  Students engage in Mathematical Practice #8, look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning as they examine similarities and differences between strategies.
