Lesson objective: Solve multi-step multiplication word problems using various strategies.

This lesson helps to build fluency with multi-digit whole number multiplication using various strategies. The area model is used here because it supports the development of other strategies and the standard algorithm. This work develops students' understanding that regardless of the strategy used, the relationships between the numbers and the solution remain the same.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #1, make sense of problems and persevere in solving them as they analyze the problem and determine a strategy for solving it.  Students engage in Mathematical Practice #8, look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning as they examine similarities and differences between strategies.

Key vocabulary:

  • area model
  • decompose
  • distributive property
  • partial product
  • place value
  • properties of operations
  • relationship
