8. Comparing two-digit numbers using place value (FP)

Lesson objective: Compare two-digit numbers using phrases like "is greater than," "is less than," "is equal to".

This lesson helps to build fluency with comparing two-digit numbers. Base-ten blocks and arrow cards are used here because they support understanding of the tens and ones that compose two-digit numbers. This work develops students' understanding that place-value is important when comparing two-digit numbers.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Students continue to explore the structure of place-value. They will see the system for grouping numbers into the tens and ones that compose the numbers) as they consider place-value while comparing two-digit numbers.
