Big Ideas: Visual models can be used to represent whole numbers as fractions. This lesson builds on students' understanding that fractions can only be compared when the two fractions refer to the same whole. The task requires students to represent fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers using a visual model. This builds toward student understanding of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Vocabulary: numerator, denominator, equivalent, fraction, visual model, whole Special Materials: None
