Generate equivalent fractions by using fraction strips

Big Ideas: Fractional parts are equal shares or equal-sized portions of a whole. Fractional models can be created to represent the same amount of a whole. This lesson builds on students' understanding of fractions as equal parts of a whole. Students are asked to generate equivalent fractional amounts and justify their reasoning using fraction strips. The task builds toward students understanding that comparisons of fractions can be modeled with manipulatives and that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Vocabulary: numerator, denominator, equivalent, fraction, equal parts, whole Special Materials: Fraction strips
