Grade 12 - 2 - You and The Poor People's Campaign

In this lesson, students will be examining "You and the Poor People's Campaign," a brochure included in the D.C. Public Library's Poor People's Campaign Collection.  This brochure was distributed to educate people about the goals and motivations of the Poor People's Campaign as they organized a large event in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1968. The students will be recording their learning on the "You and the Poor People's Campaign" handout throughout the activity.

  • 12.6.4: Describe the means that citizens use to participate in the political process (e.g., voting, campaigning, lobbying, filing a legal challenge, demonstrating, petitioning, picketing, and running for political office).

DC Content Supporting Standards

  • 12.8.4: Understand the obligations of civic-mindedness, including voting, being informed on civic issues, volunteering and performing public service, and serving in the military or alternative service.
