Grade 5 - 3 - Give Me Shelter - Living in Resurrection City

This lesson will ask students to address one of the major questions that organizers of the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C. faced in the spring of 1968: "What type of shelters do we build to house over 3,000 people in a small area for six weeks?" Students will be given the same essential constraints faced by the organizers and students will generate a design for a shelter. After sharing their designs with the class, students will see several photographs of the actual shelters constructed at Resurrection City to discuss similarities and differences in the designs. Students will be tracking their learning on a handout throughout the activity.
