Grade 3 - 9 - Martin Luther King Jr. and the Poor People's Campaign

This lesson asks students to consider the leadership qualities Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. displayed as a leader of the Poor People's Campaign. Students discuss what makes a person a leader. After learning about protests and the Poor People's Campaign, students learn about Dr. King's influence on the people of Marks, Mississippi and the Mule Train. After watching a video that shows footage of Dr. King addressing the people of Marks, students complete a cloze activity to track their learning. At the end of the lesson, students express their understanding with an exit ticket. This lesson references topics from the DCPS Social Studies Scope and Sequence 3rd-grade Unit 3 inquiry arc, "Who Changes D.C.?"

  • 3.4.2: Construct a chronological explanation of key people and events that were important in shaping the character of Washington, D.C., during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.                                         
  • 3.4.5: Identify and research outstanding statements of moral and civic principles made in Washington, D.C., as well as the leaders who delivered them, that contributed to the struggle to extend equal rights to all Americans (e.g., Lincoln and his second inaugural address, Frederick Douglass and his speech against lynching at the Metropolitan AME Church, Martin Luther King Jr. and his speeches at the Lincoln Memorial in 1957 and 1963, and Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales at the Poor People’s March).
