Grade 3 - 7 - Comparing the Solidarity Day Rally to Other Protests

This lesson introduces students to the rally, Solidarity Day, which occurred near the end of the Poor People's Campaign. Students are then asked to compare the March on Washington, Solidarity Day, and the Mother's Day March which all occurred in Washington, D.C. Students track their learning on a handout, comparing the protests by characteristics. Students express their understanding with an exit ticket, stating what the marches shared in common. This lesson references topics from the DCPS Social Studies Scope and Sequence 3rd-grade Unit 3 inquiry arc, "Who Changes D.C.?" 

DC Content Power Standards:  

  • 3.4.2: Construct a chronological explanation of key people and events that were important in shaping the character of Washington, D.C., during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
  • 3.4.3: Understand the unique nature of Washington, D.C., as the nation’s capital, a multicultural urban city, and the jurisdiction that provides the state and local government for its residents.                                              
  • 3.4.5: Identify and research outstanding statements of moral and civic principles made in Washington, D.C., as well as the leaders who delivered them, that contributed to the struggle to extend equal rights to all Americans (e.g., Lincoln and his second inaugural address, Frederick Douglass and his speech against lynching at the Metropolitan AME Church, Martin Luther King Jr. and his speeches at the Lincoln Memorial in 1957 and 1963, and Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales at the Poor People’s March).
