Lesson objective: Solve subtraction money problems using place value strategies.

This lesson helps to build fluency with using place value strategies to solve subtraction money problems. Number lines and equations are used here because this supports the decomposition of numbers into tens and ones. Students can accurately subtract with these place value strategies. This work develops students' understanding that subtraction can be used to take away amounts of money.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they represent their subtraction work with number lines, equations, drawings, and labels. Students use these representations to show their thinking of how they approached each problem.

Key vocabulary:

  • decompose
  • ones
  • place value
  • skip count
  • subtraction
  • tens
  • values

Special materials needed:

  • coins
  • hundreds grid
  • number lines (filled in and blank)
  • scratch paper
