Lesson objective: Appy knowledge about putting groups together to correctly add two groups and find a total amount.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of addition within 5 by putting groups together in a real-life situation. Students are asked to put two groups of tickets together to find the total amount. Students then compare the number of tickets the character needs to how many she has to see if she will have enough. 

Key Concept students will use: 

  • When we add, we can put groups together to find how many there are altogether.

Skills students will use: 

  • understandng addition as putting together
  • counting to find "how many" (Grade K, Unit 1)
  • counting to find one more using pictures and numerals

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they help a character find a total amount and then use reasoning skills to figure out if the total amount is the same as the amount needed.
