Lesson objective: Find one more than the number of objects in a set using numbers within 5.

This lesson helps to build procedural knowledge with finding one more than a given set or number. A 5-frame is used here because it supports students' ability to subitize numbers and quickly add one more. This work develops students' understanding that each number name we say is one more than the number name before it when we count by ones.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they play a game that will allow them to have hands-on practice with subitizing and finding one more.

Key vocabulary:

  • 5-frame
