Lesson objective: Create histograms to represent a data set.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with creating histograms. Frequency table is used here because it helps students collect and organize the information needed to create the histogram. This work develops students' understanding that data displays should be used along with calculations to represent data.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (use appropriate tools strategically) as they create a histogram with appropriately scaled intervals for the data and situation.

Key vocabulary:

  • data display
  • frequency table
  • histogram

Special materials needed:

  • pencil
  • ruler
