Big Ideas: Decimals can be rounded using an understanding of place value. Each digit within a number has a different value. In grade four, students began comparing decimals and using decimal notation for fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100. In this lesson, students will recognize the value of a digit within a decimal number. Using this understanding, students will be able to round a decimal number to any place value. Once students have mastered this skill, they can round decimals to check for accuracy in basic decimal computation problems. Vocabulary: digit, place value, round, tenths, hundredths, thousandths Special Materials: No special materials needed
