Lesson objective: Apply knowledge of unit rates to convert various currencies to US dollars.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of relationships between variables to a real-life situation. Students are asked to use the relationship between foreign and US currencies to calculate the value of various foreign currencies in terms of US dollars.

Key Concept students will use:

• the relationship between variables to find missing values in the data set

Skills students will use:

• write unit rates for a proportional relationship (Grade 6, Unit 2)
• write equations to represent the relationship between variables that are represented in a table
• write equations to represent the relationship between variables that are represented in a graph

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (make sense of and persevere with solving problems) as they use the relationship between variables to write equations comparing currencies and use the equation to convert various currencies to US dollars.

Key vocabulary:

• Australian dollars
