Lesson objective: Students understand that verbal expressions can be translated into mathematical expressions and equations.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of linear equations in one variable to a real-life  situation. Students are asked to translate verbal expressions into mathematical equations.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Properties of operations hold for expressions as we can operate on and with expressions just as we do with numbers.

Skills students will use:

  • Solving real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations (7.EE.B.3 and 7.EE.B.4.A)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they examine equations and their solutions. Students also engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they translate a verbal expression into its identical mathematical form.
