Lesson objective: Fluently subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with the standard algorithm for subtraction. Base-ten blocks and place value charts are used here because they illustrate the reasoning and process of composing and decomposing (regrouping) numbers by place value in the standard subtraction algorithm. This work develops students' understanding that we sometimes have to regroup by place value when subtracting multi-digit numbers.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they manipulate base-ten blocks in a place value chart to model the process of regrouping.
