Lesson objective: Practice finding partner numbers to make 10.

This lesson helps to build fluency with finding combinations of 10. Cubes of 10 interlocking cubes are used to support the equivalence of various combinations of 10. This work develops students' understanding that the value of 10 does not change regardless of how it is composed.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they analyze patterns to find all of the combinations that make 10.

Special materials needed:

  • Interlocking cubes, 10 per pair
  • 10 fish crackers or other counters to represent fish
