Big Ideas: Rulers can be used to precisely measure the lengths of objects to the nearest whole, half, or quarter of an inch. A line plot can be used to organize and display data. This lesson builds upon students' knowledge of fractions by focusing on representing ruler measurements. The task requires students to demonstrate their critical thinking skills by having them measure insects in a real world situation. They must represent this data using a line plot. Since this lesson strictly focuses on measurements less than one inch, this builds toward students' ability to use rulers to measure to objects measuring greater than one inch. Vocabulary: quarter, inch, line plot, data, scale Special Materials: Students should have access to the following materials for this lesson: Rulers (optional resource for launch)
