Lesson objective: Apply the definition of a function to a real-world situation.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of the definition of a function to a real-life situation. Students are asked to create a database that will use specific input values to generate correct customer information.

Students will use the key concept that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output, and the input-output pairs can be related or displayed in different ways, such as using an equation, showing values in tables, graphically, or verbally.

Skills students will use their knowledge of relations as functions (Grade 8, Unit 6, Lesson 1) and they will recognize inputs and outputs from various forms (Grade 8, Unit 6, Lesson 2).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reasoning abstractly and quantitatively) as they examine the customer information to find appropriate input information to create a working database.

Key vocabulary:

  • function
  • input
  • output
