Big Ideas: Unit rates answer the question how many (or how much) for 1. Unit rates are easier for us to generalize and extend (important for comparison). The goal of this lesson is for students to deepen their understanding of rate and unit rate by applying it to problems involving rate of speed. An introduction to the distance = rate x time (d = rt) formula is modeled in the task in a more familiar rate form. Although students may vary with skills to apply the formula in various forms, connecting what they know about multiplicative reasoning between rates will help develop this concept in future work. Vocabulary: rate, unit rate, equation, speed, average speed, constant speed Special Materials: calculators (optional)
