Big Ideas: Unit rates answer the question how many (or how much) for 1. Unit rates are easier for us to generalize and extend (important for comparison – shopping; athletic competitions). In this lesson, students are building on their understanding of rates as a special type of ratio by finding the quotient of a rate to generate the unit rate. A unit rate expresses a ratio as part-to-one, comparing a quantity in terms of one unit of another quantity. Common unit rates are cost per item or distance per time. Students recognize how unit rate, rather than rate, can be used to compare things in the real world. Vocabulary: ratio, rate, unit rate, per, for each, for every, composed unit Special Materials: Optional handouts in supplementary materials
