Lesson objective: Apply single transformations that produce congruent figures in the coordinate plane.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of single transformations in the coordinate plane to a real-life situation. Students are asked to use congruent pieces of colored glass to create a stained-glass pattern in the coordinate plane.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • The structure of the coordinate plane allows us to describe geometric transformations using coordinates.

Skills students will use:

  • describing transformations in the coordinate plane
  • performing single transformations in the coordinate plane

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they describe and perform transformations (using coordinates) to create a pattern in the coordinate plane.

Special materials needed:

  • patty paper (optional)
