Big Ideas: Rates are a special type of ratio that can be expressed in percent out of a hundred. Unit rates answer the question how many (or how much) for 1. This lesson builds on the students’ understanding of unit rates and previous work with fractions and decimals. The task encourages the use of tape diagrams to build conceptual understanding of rate out of 100 as a comparison of numbers compared to 100. Vocabulary: rate, unit rate, percent
