Big Ideas: Rates are a special type of ratio that can be expressed in percent out of a hundred. Unit rates answer the question how many (or how much) for 1. Unit rates are easier for us to generalize and extend (important for comparison). This lesson builds on the students’ understanding of unit rates and percent from previous work with finding percent, parts, and unit rate per 1%. The task asks for the use of tape diagrams to build conceptual understanding of rate out of 100 as a comparison of numbers compared to 100. The goal is for students to deepen their understanding of the relationship between the whole, part, percent and unit rate per 1%. Vocabulary: rate, unit rate, part-total, percent Special Materials: supplemental handout (optional)
