Big Ideas: We can use the properties of addition to find the sum or difference of rational numbers more easily. This lesson builds on students' previous work with locating positive and negative integers on the number line and understanding integers in context in sixth grade. The task asks students to add and subtract positive and negative rational numbers in various forms. Students are provided with the context of movement of the water level and asked to determine the change in water level. It then provides the ending water level and asks students to determine the initial water level. Students are asked to apply understanding and strategies of the associative property to integers, positive and negative fractions, and decimals. Students will be reviewing converting fractions, decimals, and centimeters to meters. Vocabulary: integers, rational numbers Special Materials: None
