Big Ideas: One way to think of subtraction is finding the difference (or the distance) between two numbers. This lesson builds on students' previous work with locating positive and negative integers on the number line and understanding integers in context in sixth grade. The task asks students to represent subtraction of integers as distance on the number line. Students are provided with the context of changing temperatures and asked to use the number line to model the difference or distance model of subtraction. Vocabulary: difference, subtraction, minuend, subtrahend, positive, negative, high, low, temperature Special Materials: Student number lines
